Shelton man admits defrauding pandemic relief program
June 24, 2025 — David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Harry Chavis, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation in New England, and Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Boston Division, announced that Tony Sterlin Cantave, of Shelton, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven for defrauding a COVID-19 pandemic relief program.

Former Santa Cruz County treasurer sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing over $38 million in county funds
June 24, 2025 — Elizabeth Gutfahr, of Rio Rico, Arizona, was sentenced on June 23, 2025, by United States District Judge Rosemary C. Márquez to 120 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Gutfahr previously pleaded guilty to Embezzlement by a Public Official, Money Laundering, and Tax Evasion. Gutfahr was also ordered to pay approximately $51.8 million in restitution to Santa Cruz County and the United States Treasury.

Gillette man sentenced for defrauding U.S. government
June 24, 2025 — James M. Alexander, of Gillette, Wyoming, was sentenced to 12 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release for theft of government property (disability benefits) and filing a false income tax return. In addition, the court ordered restitution of $409,422.28 and a special assessment of $200. U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson imposed the sentence on June 17 in Cheyenne. Judge Johnson ordered the Defendant to begin serving the 12-month sentence on August 4, 2025.

Philadelphia tax preparer sentenced to three years in prison for filing false returns
June 23, 2025 — United States Attorney David Metcalf announced that James Jean, of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was sentenced today to three years in prison, a one-year term of supervised release, a $10,000 fine, and restitution of $12,717 by United States District Judge John F. Murphy for knowingly and willfully including false energy credits in tax forms that he prepared for paying customers.
