Houston Community College (HCC) entrepreneurial workshops

HCC is hosting several entrepreneurial workshops and if you’re a small business owner you’ll want to attend. Various topics will be discussed such as e-file, hiring employees vs contractors, home office use, payroll management, tax scams and more. IRS Stakeholder Liaison will also be speaking at each workshop, and time will be allotted for Q & A.

July 12 - Getting IRS Help - We will provide guidance on how to obtain IRS assistance online, by phone, in-person, and through self-service options. We will give an overview of IRS Stakeholder Liaison, Taxpayer Assistance, and Taxpayer Advocate Units and the services each provide.

July 19 - Getting Ready Ahead of Filing Season - This topic will cover tax return preparation & payment options, obtaining personal tax information, checking refund status, selecting a tax preparer, IRS Direct File (for select states), paycheck checkup, and year-round tax planning tips.

July 26 - Claiming Refundable Tax Credits- Information about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, American Opportunity Tax Credit, Premium Tax Credit, and other refundable credits available to taxpayers.

August 24 - Protecting Against Identity Theft-? We will discuss steps taxpayers can take to protect their tax-related information, including how to use the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) to secure their return information.

Beaumont - IRS small business tax workshop series

This Lunch and Learn workshop series is constructed so that the first two sessions may be relevant to everyone no matter what kind of business you have or if you have employees. The remaining two sessions are for those who already have or who are thinking about hiring employees. The workshops are designed as an awareness seminar to inform business owners of their tax obligations. Tax information for each of the small business structures is provided along with a review of independent contractors versus employees, and an introduction to tax forms required from a small business. The Internal Revenue Service Stakeholder Liaison Sheba Gonzalez will deliver the workshops and following Q & A.

July 10, Session 1- Federal Taxes And Your New Business With an Overview of Schedule C will cover:
We'll explain the purpose of the employer identification number, describe basic recordkeeping requirements for tax purposes, define basic bookkeeping and accounting methods, explain the forms of business organizations, suggest how to select the paid tax preparer, and close with an overview of Schedule C income, expenses, and calculating net profit/loss.

July 25, Session 2 - Home Office Deductions and Filing and paying business taxes electronically will cover:
In this workshop, we'll describe IRS E-File and its benefits for your individual and business returns, as well as describing electronic payment options, so you can determine which is best for your business. We'll review the requirements you must make to qualify for a home office deduction: how to determine the business percentage of home use, the types of expenses you can and cannot deduct either in full or according to the percentage, how to determine the limits on deductions, and where to deduct the expenses on your return.

August 7, Session 3 - Worker Classification and Calculating Withholding When Hiring Employees or Independent Contractors will cover:
Federal Taxes When Hiring Employees or Independent Contractors. In this workshop we'll discuss your responsibilities as an employer or as one who pays others for services in the course of your trade or business. We also cover employee vs independent contractors. Whether you're handling this yourself or paying someone else to do it, you need to know this important information. ob体育 to Manage Payroll and Withholding the Correct Amount of Taxes. In this workshop we'll discuss your responsibilities as an employer to identify wages that are subject to employment taxes. We'll explain the difference between an accountable plan and a non-accountable plan. And we'll show you how to calculate your payroll taxes using the appropriate method. We will also discuss federal unemployment taxes.

August 22, Session 4 - Making and Reporting Your Payroll Tax Deposits and Hiring U.S. Residents Who Aren't U.S. Citizens will cover:
Tax Deposits and Filing a Return to Report Your Payroll Taxes. We'll explain the federal tax deposit process, deposit requirements and penalties, and show you how to file any of the following: Form 941, Employers Quarterly Federal Tax Return, if you are a quarterly filer; Form 944, Employers Annual Federal Tax Return, if you’re designated as an annual filer; and/or Form 943, Employer's Annual Tax Return for Agricultural Employees, if you're an agricultural employer. and Hiring U.S. Residents Who Aren't U.S. Citizens - In this segment you'll learn how to verify an employee's identity and status with proper documentation, withhold federal taxes at the proper withholding or treaty rate, deposit or pay the tax withheld properly, and file accurate and timely withholding tax returns
