San Antonio couple sentenced to federal prison for tax evasion

Oct. 31, 2024 — A San Antonio woman was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for tax evasion and aiding and abetting. According to court documents, Rachel Olivia Markum, and her husband, Robert Franklin Markum Jr., prepared and signed a false and fraudulent form 1040 joint tax return for calendar year 2016, which was then submitted to the Internal Revenue Service. The fraudulent tax return reported the couple’s sole income as gross receipts or sales from the business Camping and Fishing Outlet as $3,530,473, while she was aware that the true amount of gross receipts exceeded $4 million.

L.A. Fashion District wholesaler and two of its executives found guilty of money laundering and avoiding tariffs and taxes

Oct. 30, 2024 — A wholesale clothing importer located in the Fashion District of downtown Los Angeles and two of its executives have been found guilty by a jury of avoiding the payment of more than $8 million in customs duties on imported clothing, and of running a scheme in which the company laundered money and failed to report on tax returns more than $17 million derived from cash transactions, the Justice Department announced today.

Nov. 4, 2024 — David Scott Cacchione was sentenced today to 40 months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud in connection with an investment fraud scheme and a false federal disaster loan application, and tax evasion. The sentence was handed down by the Honorable James Donato, U.S. District Judge.

Fresno woman who managed her husband’s orthodontics practice pleads guilty to tax charges and agrees to forfeit her mansion and BMW

Nov. 4, 2024 — Pilar Rose, formerly of Fresno, pleaded guilty today to tax evasion and obstructing an IRS audit, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. Rose also agreed to forfeit her interest in more than $2.5 million of proceeds from the sale of her and her husband’s mansion and BMW that authorities previously seized.

Nov. 6, 2024 — A former New York-based branch manager was sentenced yesterday to 13 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $208,938.68 in both restitution and forfeiture of criminal proceeds for misusing his position to steal approximately $208,938.68 from a customer’s accounts.

Scranton man charged with committing $850,000 in COVID-19 pandemic fraud

Nov. 6, 2024 — The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced today that Yoel Weiss of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was charged in an indictment with 41 combined counts of wire fraud, false statements to the Small Business Administration, identity theft, unlawful monetary transactions, and witness tampering.

Nov. 6, 2024 — An Indiana man who owns Glycerin Traders marketed and sold an “Ethanol Extraction” product as a pure food-grade product, when in fact, the product contained high levels of methanol leading to multiple deaths and severe physical injuries for those who consumed the product.
