Bridgeport tax return preparer sentenced prison for tax fraud
August 2, 2022 — Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Torise Baker, of Bridgeport, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford to three months of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, for a tax fraud offense. Judge Shea also ordered Baker to serve the first month of her supervised release in home detention, and to pay a $7,500 fine.

Husband and wife sentenced to federal prison for conspiracy related to fraudulent tax filings of Maryland auto body repair shop
July 6, 2022 — Yesterday U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis sentenced Ercin Kalender of Alexandria, Virginia and Lizette Kalender of Alexandria, Virginia to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for conspiracy related to tax fraud within their corporate filings and business taxes. Judge Xinis also ordered the Kalenders to pay restitution of $2,219,602.

October 13, 2022 — United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that Christian Dunbar, of Philadelphia, PA, the former Philadelphia City Treasurer, pleaded guilty in front of United States District Court Judge Cynthia M. Rufe to procurement of citizenship unlawfully and through multiple false statements; submitting false citizenship papers; and failure to file tax returns, all in connection with false statements and altered documents he submitted as part of his application to become a U.S. citizen, and failing to file his federal tax returns in three separate years.

Mastermind of 11.1 million dollar Paycheck Protection Program fraud scheme sentenced to fifteen years
May 19, 2022 — Darrell Thomas has been sentenced after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud and to money laundering for masterminding a scheme to obtain 14 fraudulent loans totaling approximately $11.1 million from the Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”). To date, a total of twenty-three individuals have been charged in connection with the fraudulent scheme.
