March 30, 2023 ¡ª Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut; announced that Olga Aucapina, also known as Olga Aucapina Paredes, a citizen of Ecuador residing in Woodbridge, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven to five months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for participating in a tax refund fraud scheme.

Sept. 10, 2024 ¡ª Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Lyell Champagne, Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford to 36 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for offenses stemming from two separate fraud schemes.

May 5, 2022 ¡ª United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announces that following a 13-day trial, a federal jury has found Michael J. DaCorta (Sarasota) guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud, money laundering, and filing a false income tax return. DaCorta faces a combined maximum penalty of 33 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set. DaCorta had been charged in a superseding indictment in February 2021.

July 28, 2022 ¡ª Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Deron D. Freeman, of Glastonbury, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport to 24 months of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, for tax fraud offenses.

March 8, 2023 ¡ª A Philadelphia woman was sentenced today to 100 months in prison for conspiring to defraud the IRS and assisting others in filing false income tax returns.

September 12, 2022 ¡ª Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that Ariel Jimenez, a/k/a "Melo," was sentenced to 12 years in prison in connection with his leading role in a broad tax fraud and identity theft conspiracy and his actions to launder the proceeds of his crimes. United States District Judge Sidney H. Stein imposed today's sentence.

June 30, 2023 ¡ª Jose Fernandez has been sentenced for seeking over $5 million by submitting fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program ("PPP") applications, filing false tax returns using stolen identities, using credit cards he obtained with stolen identities, and check fraud. He ultimately obtained more than $2 million in fraudulent funds, which he then used for his personal benefit.

Sept. 6, 2024 ¡ª Abraham Yusuff, of Round Rock, Texas ¡ª the leader of a scheme to defraud the IRS of over $110 million ¡ª was sentenced today to more than 14 years in prison.

March 1, 2023 ¡ª A Tewksbury woman pleaded guilty today in federal court in Boston to embezzling more than $1.8 million from her employer, collecting unemployment assistance while employed fulltime and related tax charges.

Nov. 20, 2024 ¡ª A North Carolina man was sentenced today to one year and one day in prison for not paying more than $2 million in employment taxes.
