Former Local 98 business manager John Dougherty sentenced to six years in prison for public corruption, embezzlement convictions
July 11, 2024 — United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced that John Dougherty, of Philadelphia, PA, was sentenced today by United States District Court Judge Jeffrey L. Schmehl to 72 months’ imprisonment, three years of supervised release, forfeiture of $353,941.35, a $7,100 special assessment, and $50,000 in restitution now, with full restitution to be determined later, for crimes arising from his embezzlement of funds belonging to Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (“Local 98”) and multiple crimes involving his payment of bribes to codefendant Robert Henon.

Jury convicts former San Francisco public utilities commission general manager of felony bribery and bank fraud charges
July 17, 2023 — A federal jury today convicted Harlan Kelly, the former General Manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of charges that he accepted bribes and gifts from a local businessman in a scheme to provide confidential information about the city public bidding process and steer city contracts to that person’s businesses, announced First Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Robbins, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (CI) Special Agent in Charge Darren Lian, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Robert K. Tripp. The verdict follows a two-week trial before United States Chief District Judge Richard Seeborg.

Chinese national real estate developer appears in court to face charges of bribing a prominent San Francisco public official
July 19, 2023 — Zhang Li, founder and chief executive officer of a Chinese real estate development company appeared last night in U.S. District Court on charges that he bribed former head of the San Francisco Department of Public Works Mohammed Nuru, announced First Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Robbins, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (CI) Special Agent in Charge Darren Lian, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Robert K. Tripp. A U.S. company that Zhang controls, Z&L Properties, Inc., was also charged with honest services wire fraud for providing bribes and gifts to Nuru in exchange for favorable city treatment of Z&L Properties’ mixed-use project at 555 Fulton Street in San Francisco, Calif. As part of a negotiated disposition both Zhang and Z&L Properties will waive the right to indictment and admit that they engaged in certain conduct.

Former president of the Madison District Public Schools Board of Education and a local contractor charged in $560,000 bribery scheme
July 14, 2022 — Albert Morrison, the former president of the Madison District Public Schools Board of Education and local school district contractor, John David, have been charged in a superseding indictment with conspiracy to commit bribery arising out of David's payments of over $560,000 in bribes to Morrison in exchange for $3.1 million in school contracts to David, U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison announced today. The bribery charges were added to the indictment filed on April 6, 2022, that charged Morrison with tax evasion and failure to file tax returns in connection with his failure to report over $500,000 in income from David.

Defendant pleads guilty to accepting more than 500,000 dollars in bribes in connection with a multimillion dollar New York City public works contract
September 9, 2022 — Earlier today in federal court in Brooklyn, George Djurasevic pled guilty to bribery, in violation of the Travel Act, admitting that he accepted more than half-a-million dollars in bribe payments in his role as a manager of a company (the "Company") contracted by the New York City Water Board (NYCWB) to provide sewer and water pipe repair services to New York City homeowners. Djurasevic also pled guilty to tax evasion. Today's proceeding was held before United States Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo. When sentenced, Djurasevic faces a total of 10 years in prison.
